Produce, Don't Consume: Producer vs Consumer

Episode Summary

How I look at our two different roles on social media, and how you can use it to make your life better! ---TRANSCRIPT--- (00:00): Hi, everyone, you're listening to Internet Profits Blueprint podcast. I am Lik Foon. And today I want to talk about the difference being a consumer versus a producer of social media and how it can help you to become more productive throughout the day, and also to become a better marketer. (00:19): So, today I want to talk specifically about two different roles on social media. And this is something I learned from Brendan Burchard. I first heard of this concept on podcast quite a while ago, but he's talking about being a producer versus a consumer. He said, I am not a consumer of social media. I'm a producer. I don't get sucked in eight hours a day on my phone because I'm not consuming social media. I don't consume it. I just produce it. (00:51): So what's the difference between a consumer and a producer, right? So right now, every single day, if you are naturally take out your phone, scrolling through your Facebook feeds and clicking on the profile of your friends to look at their memes, the picture of what they eat and do, and spending hours a day watching funny prank videos, then you are a consumer of social media. You are consuming contents from social media, and I think there's nothing wrong with that. There will be times when you just want to rest and chill a little bit, checking out what's happening around your circle, but it shouldn't be all day every day. Most of the time, you have to be purposeful about why you are there. When I look at my mother, she's on social media all day every day, watching what her friends do, what they eat and watching funny things. Again, there's nothing wrong with this, but I saw how it only makes her tired and having difficulty to sleep and end up waking up with low energy. So if you are just being a consumer all day long, it drains up your energy every day, and that is not good for you. (02:06): On the other hand, there are people who are being producers of social media. These are people who are producing something to the world, to the society and people around them. They are creating contents and putting out there with the goal to help and serve. They are motivating and inspiring others to take action and to make their lives better in some ways. And that's the difference of a consumer and producer every single day. When I log into my Facebook and Instagram, I am not there to consume a bunch of things. I'm there to do research with the goal to get ideas and inspirations for what I could create for my audience, for you guys on my podcast and Instagram. I am consuming with the goal to produce. I'm looking at what new products are being launched in my market, what ads are so creative that it grabs my attention, and what kind of posts are interesting and people are reacting to it. These are what I'm looking when I'm on social media. So my advice for you is every time when you're consuming things on social media, do it with the mindset of you need to produce something from it. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to create your own contents from it just like me, because I understand that not everyone wants to do that, but just think about how you can produce. It could be you are producing for yourself, right? How can you take what you consume and apply it to your own life or work to make your life better, more interesting and more fun? And now it is different. You are consuming to make the society better or your personal life better. I think this is a big mindset shift that will make our lives better and when we are no longer consuming without direction. (04:04): I remember Facebook said it themselves. They said when they are creating Facebook, their goal is to get people addicted to it and keep coming back. So you have to have clarity and don't fall into their trap. You can still use it, but you aren't going to get sucked into the black hole. You want to know when's the time to stop and jump back to your life and work, to produce. That's the difference. Anyway, hope this helps to get you start thinking about it. And the more you become a producer over a consumer, the more productive you become and the better marketer you will become, and also the more your income will go up. All right. Thank you for listening today. And by the way, I also noticed that there is a slight increasing in my listeners and I really, really appreciate it. And thank you for listening. It motivates me to keep thinking about how to create better contents that can help you all in your journey. All right, with that said, that's all for today. And I will talk to you again next week.
